Vale Janet Tancred

Published Sat 27 Jan 2024

It was with much sadness that we advise of the passing of Janet Tancred, on 26 January 2024.

Janet Tancred served SWHL as Treasurer from 1997 to 2000 and then became Masters Registrar from 2001 to 2007.

Below is an email we received from her friend, Jane Rowlands:

Earlier today I was advised of the passing of Janet hence I am writing this with a sad and heavy heart but one that is also relieved for Janet, Graham and their families - and also to fulfill and complete a request/wish from JT herself that I write to advise you all of her passing early this morning.

My personal thoughts and memories.

JT put up a strong and courageous fight against her MND along with Graham and family and their support team. I strongly believe JT's fight was helped by her strong determination, sometimes stubborn attitude of not giving up - just like her tenacious attitude on the hockey field - be it for her beloved Parramatta or NSW Women's Masters - along with many more associations and Alliance teams she played in.

JT loved her hockey and all the friends she made both on and off the pitch including players and officials from every State/Territory within Australia and many overseas players. I am not sure which she loved more - Parramatta or NSW's

JT first represented NSW Women's Masters in 1998 (Alice Springs), then in 2004, 2005, 2007 through to 2014, 2016 through to 2019 and was our statistician in Cairns in 2022.

Janet was presented with her 15 year NSW Masters pin in 2019 (Gold Coast) along with a NSW State Service Award presented by Hockey Australia.

I had the pleasure of being JT's Manager from 2011 (Perth - Silver) - then the O'60s through to 2019 - covering the 0'60 through to the 0'65s (all gold from 2011).

I know those who had contact with JT will remember her with a smile - a tale or two of her antics and her friendship throughout the years.

JT always stated that Graham and her family were her rock through her battle over the past 3 years - but it takes a boulder to create a rock - JT you were a boulder.

Rest in Peace my friend.
